Quick results – IFK World Championship

The first day gave us as usually many impressions, and we all know that the second day will be even more exciting. Favorites does as expected, and to the second day everything goes as “planed”, with more or less the expected names in the line up. The level has been significant wide in many of the fights, and together with some “no show” – the day one could be quite different from one fighter to another. Some has pointed out that the British Open 2016 had a higher level in total…well if you reach the top 8 today, you will for sure be a fighter we all want to learn from!

The 5th IFK World Championship 2017

We must be honest to admit that the first day started disappointing. Too many “no show” characterized the tournament. Sometimes non of the two fighters even showed up, and the numbers of names and countries seems to be a part away from what listed. This is very hard for the organizer, just think about the draw. We have seen this before as well, and taken from a fighters view – warming up ready to fight – no fight. This was also a topic during the 1st KWU WC in 2013, then the middleweight category lost close to 50% of their fighters from the official line up/draw. We lost count during the first day, and some of the categories was harder “hit” than others. We should not point out the the injured or sick fighter to blame, and nor the organizers. This is two of the parts that are hurt inside when fights do not happen.

One thing for sure, start to erase fighters from the World Championship list that not are showing up. If you are not fighting – you should not be on the list either. For the organizer, use the number of fighters Which is actually present. We know that it looks better on the statistics, but keep the facts. NOTE that this is not only a case in this matter, this is a challenge we see from small tournaments to this top level.

The promoting was good, and the updates on the tournament. This is how it should be, because we live in that time.. the streaming – at last! One camera – one tatami, three cameras – three tatamis!! Of course, sometimes the stream will come and go, but that can we not control. Maybe judges and referees could be a little more updated? A main ref should know how many kg weight difference it is to point out the winner. Also judging a fighter with genten ni (and no scoring points) as the winner. Last thing, maybe it should be a tough that everything being said in the mic between ref`s and judges can be heard, and we got a feeling that not every world was meant for the whole world.

British Open 2016 blow the roof in the name of an “open” tournament. And many has pointed out that this edition had a higher level than this World Championship. It is really hard to say,, but why should we speculate on that? We have to realize that there will never be “a perfect tournament” , and one thing: would the fighters train less, or get lazy in the preparations? Never!

We can look back at a good world championship, and we look forward to see it grow!
